A gallery tribute with an unusual theme

UNLV’s Donna Beam Fine Art Gallery is showing Camelot, an exhibition honoring former director Jerry Schefcik’s 37 years of service to the university and its art community. It remains on view through November 5. A special Art Walk reception is scheduled Friday, October 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. Pacific; admission is free and open to the public.

Why camels?

Schefcik’s collection of nearly 1,000 camel figurines inspired the theme. Participating artists made 26 works responding through memory, symbolism, humor and personal connections. UNLV says one work will receive a $1,000 purchase prize and enter the gallery’s permanent collection.

The reception announcement lists Sean Clark and Schefcik as speakers, followed by a ten-minute silent dance performance. The university had not specified that performance’s start time in the reviewed release, so visitors should not read the reception’s opening time as the dance time.

Plan for the reception—not a continuous event

The gallery is in the Alta Ham Fine Arts Building, room HFA 145, on UNLV’s Maryland campus at 4505 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89154. UNLV says the October 23 Art Walk, including parking, is free and open to the public. The campus map lists accessible spaces and visitor/pay spaces in the nearby Cottage Grove Parking Garage; the Art Walk offer should not be assumed to apply to a separate gallery visit on another day.

The calendar entry below is for the October 23 reception only. It does not imply that the gallery is continuously open through November 5. Regular viewing hours, age guidance and event-specific accessibility arrangements were not provided in the reviewed announcement. Check the gallery’s current information before a separate visit. No cancellation was shown in the reviewed university pages.
