A different kind of replacement

CCSD broke ground Sept. 8 on a new school at the James Cashman Middle School campus. The district says the project will combine prekindergarten through eighth grade and include its first career and technical academy at the middle-school level.

Size, timing and funding

The district announcement identifies a planned capacity of 1,200 students and a target opening in the 2028–29 school year. It says funding comes through the 2015 Capital Improvement Program. These are project plans, not a current enrollment opportunity.

Changes reach beyond one campus

The Las Vegas Sun reported Sept. 9 that the construction project is valued at $150 million. It also reported that Rex Bell Elementary would stop operating as a neighborhood elementary school when Cashman opens, with some students moving to Cashman and others to Elaine Wynn Elementary. The report said Bell would be remodeled to serve students from Helen J. Stewart School.

What families should watch

The Sun described career pathways in health care, human services, advanced manufacturing, and management and entrepreneurship. For families, the important next information is the district's implementation detail: attendance assignments, program access and transition arrangements. Neither the groundbreaking nor this report assigns an individual child to a future school. Follow CCSD notices for those decisions as the planned opening approaches.
