October 15 update: event pause announced

First Friday organizers announced a pause in the monthly downtown event, according to FOX5 and KTNV reports published after the earlier discussion of a possible November pause. The foundation said it would work with city officials, police and other partners on the event’s future.

The organizer’s statement did not give a return date. KTNV separately reported that a spokesperson said the pause would last at least through the end of the year. That is a reported minimum pause, not an announced reopening schedule.

October 13 court and event update

FOX5 reported that the teenage defendant remained held without bail after an October 13 appearance, with the next appearance scheduled for November 17. At that time, the mayor described a possible November event pause; the subsequent organizer announcement is summarized above. The criminal charges remain allegations.

The October 8 court update

A Las Vegas Justice Court judge ordered the 17-year-old accused in the fatal First Friday shooting held without bail on Thursday, October 8. FOX5 and News 3 reported that he is being prosecuted as an adult on one open-murder charge and two attempted-murder charges, each with a deadly-weapon allegation.

That October 8 account listed an October 13 return date; the latest court update appears above. The charges and police account are allegations; the court has not made a finding of guilt.

What changed on October 6

Las Vegas police announced Tuesday evening that a 17-year-old had been arrested in connection with the shooting near First Friday that killed one teenager and wounded two other people. The arrest was an early development in the investigation into the October 2 gunfire near South Main Street and West Charleston Boulevard.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal and News 3 reported that police arrested the teenager Tuesday and booked him into Clark County Juvenile Hall on a murder-with-a-deadly-weapon charge and two counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. Those charges describe the allegations against him; they do not establish guilt.

The police account of the shooting

According to the police account reported by News 3, officers in the area heard gunfire, entered the crowd and located wounded people. Three victims were taken to a hospital, where one died. Detectives said a physical altercation preceded the shooting and that the person who fired had left before officers arrived.

The Review-Journal placed the shooting at approximately 10:17 p.m. The reported arrest supersedes earlier coverage that described a search for the suspected shooter.
