A payment request deserves a second look

The city of Las Vegas is warning about people impersonating government officials to collect fraudulent payments, including requests involving permits and bail.

Planning and zoning

The city says legitimate planning-payment messages direct applicants to their online portal. A request for a wire transfer, an unusual reply instruction or questionable letterhead should prompt independent verification. The planning contact number in the warning is 702-229-6301.

Bail payments

The notice says city bail can be paid through its online portal or in person at the bail window at 3200 Stewart Ave. Its bail hotline is 702-229-6460. A stranger's urgent request to send money elsewhere is not a substitute for checking the official process.

Take away the pressure

The city's broader advice is to contact an organization through a number obtained independently from its verified website or an account statement. Do not rely solely on contact details supplied by the person seeking payment.
