What authorities reported
The Justice Department says a roughly three-month Las Vegas-area enforcement campaign resulted in 144 arrests, the recovery of 290 firearms and the seizure of 1,124 kilograms of narcotics. The department announced the results October 8 and said the operation began in July.
The federal release values seized cash and other assets at more than $1 million. FOX5 reported that officials described the campaign as a 68-day operation and separated the arrests into 123 state cases and 21 federal cases. The Justice Department said the work also generated 13 Homeland Security Task Force investigations.
A multi-agency operation
The Justice Department identified the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Marshals Service, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and other local, state and federal partners among the participating agencies.
The federal announcement characterizes the targets as violent offenders and organizations linked to drug trafficking and other crimes. It does not provide a complete defendant-by-defendant list, identify the evidence in every case or show that every arrest arose from the same alleged conduct.
Arrests are not convictions
An arrest or criminal charge is not a finding of guilt. Each person charged is entitled to the presumption of innocence unless proven guilty, and the outcome of any individual case depends on its own evidence and court process.
Because the department released aggregate results, the totals should not be used to infer a specific charge, immigration status, gang affiliation or level of culpability for any unnamed person. Future charging documents and court records may add detail or change the status of individual cases.
